Majority Of Swedish Young Women Report Fluid Sexualities

According to one online survey in Sweden, the majority of young women report being attracted to both women and men. The researchers suggest this is evidence of a trend toward greater openness about sexuality in Sweden.

The Study

In an online survey conducted by researchers at Malmö University in Sweden, 855 young adults in Sweden were asked about their sexual desires, fantasies, and behavior. Among women, 31% said they were sometimes attracted to women, but most often to men, and 39% reported having sexual fantasies about both women and men. Among men, 7% reported they were sometimes attracted to men, but most often to women, and 8% reported having sexual fantasies about both men and women. Thirteen percent of women reported having sex with both women and men, compared to only 3% of men who reported the same.

Sexual Fluidity

With increasing acceptance of bisexuality and homosexuality and sexual diversity in general, more and more people are experimenting with their sexualities. In the past, sexuality was defined solely by sexual behavior; more recently, sexuality has been conceptualized as multidimensional and complex – sexual identity, behavior, fantasies, attraction, relationships, emotions, sexual politics, and membership in sexual communities and subcultures. Today, sexual fluidity has emerged, an new trend characterized by sexual expression that is not easily defined by our common sexual identities (e.g., lesbian, gay, bisexual, heterosexual) and orientations (e.g., heterosexual, homosexual). This new trend was even featured on The Oprah Winfrey Show in early 2009. It seems that women are reporting greater fluidity in their sexualities than men, but young people in general tend to be more fluid than older generations.
